Army Mom’s Safe Haven

Lonely men in winter cities
stop for coffee in fast-food places,
sit with other lonely men;
some widowers, some just
needing male companionship –
Needing to hear voices, see faces ~

Needing to get out of the
empty house,
the empty marriage,
the empty nest –

Lonely men walk or drive
to places of light,
after they’ve made it through a night
filled with things they’ve dealt with –
loss, or grief or war……
things that make it hard to rest.

They’re searching for sustenance,
and not just food –
But light, and warmth, other people
on a dark winter night or morning………

Life creeps up on
us sometimes ~
and deals us the bitter blow
of death, divorce, or loneliness,
all without warning.
