Army Mom’s Safe Haven

Christina: The Pit Boys

A little group of pit boys
is emerging from the mine
blackened little figures
replete with dust and grime;

Coughing with the coal dust,
squinting at the fading light,
they are too tired to even talk,
too tired to play, or fight.

They trudge home to their families;
they've worked the day like men.
They'll eat and then they'll fall asleep
tomorrow, they'll go down again.
