DARK AS A DUNGEON

Well, the tough dirty miner works hard for his pay,
He works through the night and most of the day;
But there's no one works harder way down in the mine,
Than Billy the pit horse, a slave to the mine.

It's dark as a dungeon; it's damp as the dew,
Where the dangers are doubled and the pleasures are few;
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines,
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine.

Well, come all you young fellows, your fortunes ye seek,
Don't bury yourselves in the mine so deep;
It gets into your body and it creeps to your soul,
Till the blood in your veins goes as black as the coal.

It's dark as a dungeon; it's damp as the dew,
Where the dangers are doubled and the pleasures are few;
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines,
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine.

It's dark as a dungeon, it's damp as the dew,
Where the dangers are doubled and the pleasures are few;
Where the rain never falls and the sun never shines,
It's dark as a dungeon way down in the mine.

Hi Christina,

You may have guessed by my name that I am related to Merle Travis, and you are right. He was my uncle, the younger of my father's two brothers. He was also one of my best friends and more like a father to me than my father was.

I came into your website while looking through "Merle Travis Stuff" on the internet to see what was new or different. I must confess, I don't quite get the link between my uncle and the Army, or the Army and the coal mines, but I am glad I found your website anyway. It is beautiful (my brothers and I are all Army veterans).

I apologize for not signing your guestbook, but every time I have done that, I have ended up with a flood of mail. I am happy to hear from people who knew or loved my uncle, but much of what I get is spam. I hope this will do as an alternative. Also, I hope you will free to contact me if you so desire. Thanks again for the beautiful website.
